Responsibilities and Expectations: 

As the Director of Payroll, you will be responsible for managing our multi-state and country (US & CA) payroll operations, overseeing the payroll team, and resolving complex payroll issues. Your attention to detail and experience in managing payroll for a growing organization will drive your success in this role. This is a great, in office, opportunity to help set a strategic direction, mentor, and develop a team. Responsibilities include:

  • Implements, maintains, and reviews payroll processing systems to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishments, taxes, and other deductions.
  • Streamline and document payroll procedures.
  • Approve one-time or permanent changes in payroll (e.g. salary increases, tax deductions, bonuses, expense reimbursements, tuition reimbursements).
  • Manage payroll discrepancies quickly and efficiently.
  • Stays up to date with industry trends for payroll practices.
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
  • Trains and develops current staff in the department.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, and changes to pay rates.
  • Collaborates with Finance to create payroll reports and forecasts.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Facilitates audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.
  • Identifies and recommends updates to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures.
  • Develop and maintain departmental metrics to drive action and improvement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Competencies: 

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Human Resources, or related field required.
  • 5+ years of proven work experience as a Payroll Manager or Director.
  • Extensive knowledge of the payroll function including preparation, balancing, internal control, and payroll taxes.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills.
  • Ability to adapt to the changing environment and support multiple internal customers.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency with ADP WFN, preferred.
  • CPP designation, preferred.
